Behind the Name: Keon K9
Chrystal Pappas, founder of Keon K9, brings together decades of experience with dogs and the discipline, leadership, and loyalty she forged as a United States Marine during the Iraq War. A proud Greek-American, Chrystal named her company after the ancient myth of Keon Khryseos — the “Golden Dog” who protected the infant Zeus.
This legend reflects the values that define her work today: loyalty, protection, compassion, and unwavering dedication.
The German Shepherd — honored as the Golden Middle Dog — sits at the core of Keon K9’s identity. Known for its remarkable balance of strength and gentleness, courage and sensitivity, intelligence and devotion, this breed embodies Chrystal’s training philosophy: structure paired with heart, leadership paired with understanding.
From Chrystal’s heritage to her training approach, the Golden Dog and the Golden Middle Dog form the foundation of everything Keon K9 stands for.
The Myth of the Golden Dog
In Greek mythology, Keon Khryseos means “Golden Dog.”
When the Goddess Rhea hid the infant Zeus on the island of Crete, she placed a sacred golden dog to guard him and his nurse, the goat Amalthea. Loyal, fearless, and steadfast, the Golden Dog protected the future king of the gods until he was strong enough to rise.
In gratitude, Zeus placed the faithful dog among the stars as the constellation Canis Major, home to Sirius —
the Dog Star.
This ancient symbol carries the values Keon K9 is
built upon: loyalty, protection, guidance, and devotion.
The Golden Middle Dog
The modern German Shepherd is often called the “Golden Middle Dog” — a title earned for its perfect equilibrium:
Strong yet gentle
Intelligent yet steady
Protective yet balanced
Alert yet calm
Loyal in every environment
This harmony mirrors the role of the Golden Dog in myth:
a guardian powerful enough to protect the King of Gods and devoted enough to serve.
For this reason, the German Shepherd stands proudly as the mascot and heart of Keon K9 — representing the ideal canine balance we strive to cultivate in every dog we train.
The Values We Uphold
The Golden Dog’s legacy and the German Shepherd’s “golden middle” both embody the values at the center of Keon K9:
Loyalty
We are fully committed to every dog and every client who places their trust in us.
Protection
We provide a safe, structured, clean environment where dogs can thrive physically and emotionally.
Guidance
We train with clarity, compassion, balance, and real-world practicality.
These principles guide every lesson, every transformation, and every decision we make.
A Name Rooted in Heritage
For Chrystal, this myth isn’t just a story — it’s part of her cultural identity.
Choosing Keon (“dog”) and Khryseos (“golden”) honors both her Greek ancestry and her lifelong devotion to dogs. It binds past and present into a symbol of purpose, strength, and trust.
Our Purpose Today
Just as the Golden Dog watched over Zeus, Keon K9 is here to watch over your dog’s growth, confidence, and
well-being.
Whether your dog is here for a board-and-train, a private lesson, or a structured boarding stay, we uphold the same dedication and loyalty that kept this story alive for thousands of years.
A Name Written in the Stars
On a clear night, look toward Canis Major.
There shines the Golden Dog — our namesake — a reminder of where we come from, the bond we honor, and the purpose behind everything we do:
To help dogs and their people trust, train, and
transform — together.
